SPORTS PODIATRY

Central Coast Sports & DANCE Podiatry

The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art

Sports and Dance podiatry involves the diagnosis and treatment of foot, heel, ankle or lower limb pain and dysfunction.

Dance podiatry also incorporates the assessment and assistance of the young dancer's transition into Pointe work.

  • Pre-Pointe Assessments

  • Dance injury management

  • Dance Injury prevention

A Pre-Pointe assessment is an essential component for a successful transition onto Pointe.

Our podiatrist Victoria, has extensive knowledge and understanding of dance technique having trained as a classical ballet dancer with the Australian Ballet School, performing with the Australian Ballet Dancer's Company and French modern dance company "Compagnie Pointe Six". This was followed by many years of teaching classical and contemporary dance and the authentic pilates method both in France and Australia.

The combination of podiatry and the pilates method can assist in improving dance and sporting performance, strength and technique.

We utilise a range of podiatric modalities such as

  • Biomechanical assessment
  • Specific exercises
  • Gait and posture retraining
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Trigger point dry needling
  • Remedial massage
  • Orthotic therapy
  • Strapping and taping
  • Footwear modification and advice

Dysfunctional gait patterns, poor posture or muscle imbalances can also predispose the feet to wear patterns or callus formation caused by friction and overload in particular areas. Over time callus and corns can become extremely painful causing guarding or compensatory movement patterns which may in turn lead to pain or injury occurring further along our body’s kinetic chain.

Callus and corn removal may be provided in your treatment with padding and taping to offload the affected area but it is also very important to establish the functional cause of the wear pattern for successful long term management.

What is an Initial consultation?

A one hour comprehensive functional and biomechanical assessment including gait assessment, joint range of motion, muscle testing, footwear advice, exercise and ongoing treatment plan.

Ongoing or regular consultations

One hour or half hour treatment sessions that may include a combination of podiatric modalities such as joint mobilisation, dry needling, massage, taping, strapping, footwear modification and specific Pilates exercises.

Orthotic Therapy

Custom orthotics are made to a hand crafted model or cast of your foot allowing for individual foot discrepancies to be accommodated and offer long-term wear, flexibility and optimal comfort.

Being individually made they are more expensive than over the counter orthotic innersoles and can range in price depending on the style and the materials required for your particular needs. Health fund rebates are available.

Trigger Point Dry Needling of the Lower Limb

Myofascial trigger points are very common causes of musculoskeletal pain in the lower limb particularly the calf and shin areas.

They are hyperirritable spots or “knots” in the fascia of superficial skeletal muscle that often feel as if they need to be stretched often with little success. Pain and tenderness may be local or radiate distally and may be caused by trauma, overuse or dysfunctional biomechanics and poor posture.

Dry needling may help to release the tension associated with the trigger point and provide relief from pain and can be a beneficial addition to a comprehensive treatment plan.
